I Woke Up With No Voice

One of the finest newly written examples of contemporary and physical theatre, Mouthpiece has played to sold-out houses in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and many European countries — and is now staged in Turkey under the direction of acclaimed director Tamer Levent.

It is the story of a woman writer who questions violence against women and the place of women in society, in the context of how similar her life is to her recently deceased mother's. Cassandra, who wakes up to the news of her mother's death, comes to realize the striking similarities between their lives while trying to write the eulogy she must deliver. Her acceptance and denial of this truth are personified as two conflicting sides, manifested in two separate bodies that mostly argue, yet occasionally come to terms.

Written for the rights of women who — overtly or covertly — suffered oppression, who were silenced, battered, even killed in cold blood, the play is a powerful act of defiance. With her rebellious spirit, Cassandra wants to prove that a society where women can find their voices and express themselves is possible.
